How To Do a Photo Walk in the Backyard with Creativity

Have you ever heard of a photo walk?  A photo walk is very simple.  Usually a group, consisting of a walk leader (usually an advanced or pro photographer) and those interested in participating in the photo walk.   You choose a location that can be walked in a certain time frame and then you shoot what you come across and interests you photographically in the walk.  An example of the results can be seen at the DPS Las Vegas photo walk which took place during the BlogWorldExpo in September.

They can take place anywhere you want to have a few photographers get together and pound the pavement (or dirt) to get those creative minds moving.  For a photo walk tutorial or more information on how they are generally done, see 10 Tips For A Great Photowalk.  This basically is what I did for 2 years at UAB while I was studing photography.  We would just go out and shoot at a predetermined location and all look at the results the following class.

Moths in the Alabama Fall

There are a few differences but it now has a fancy name, and we have things like blogs that can be used for show-and-tell.  Whatever you want to call it, it is always a good learning process and helps open your eyes to what interesting photographic elements are around us all the time.

My Own Photo Walk in the Backyard

With all that said, you can always do a photowalk in your own backyard.  I have done this for many many years and it doesn’t matter if you live in a high rise in NYC or on a farm in Alabama.  There is always something you can call your backyard, even if it is the MARTA station outside your house or office in Atlanta (or MTA station if you are in NYC).

I try to get in a little exercise each day, so I usually walk in my backyard but now that the sun is setting around 4:30pm each day, I have to get out there a little earlier to be able to see where I am going.  Yesterday I decided to take my camera bag with me and do a fast photo walk before the sun went down.  I really only had time for two different shots.

First I came across this swarm of gnats flying through the setting sun.  Have any of your photographer out there tried to get a acceptable shot of a swarm of gnats?  Wasn’t as easy I had initially thought, but the second shot above was the result.  This was shot hand held in manual everything.  At least the wash of sun gave me some good color on the fall leaves in the background.

Next I came across this feather that was stuck in the barbed wire fence that runs along the length of our property.  Probably something I walked by every day and just never noticed.  One of my most favorite types of photography is marco photography (or closeup), so I took out my macro lens and shot the first image above as the sun had set.  The sun was all but gone at this point so depth of field was interesting to preview, but it was an image I walked by every day and never noticed until I did the photo walk.

By the way, for those writers or painters out there it works the same way.  Just take your canvas or journal and get out of your office or normal environment and see how creative you can be by changing your surroundings.

Any time you think there is nothing to shoot, just try taking a photo walk in your backyard.  You might be surprised by the results.  Anyone else tried this?

Moving in Day Has Arrived

Moving In

Moving day has come and gone without much fanfare, just how we wanted it to be. We finally got the major contractors to finish up and were able to move in just in time to entertain my parent’s for the Thanksgiving holidays and Scott’s parents for Christmas.

We actually moved in the weekend before Thanksgiving, giving us about 4 days to put up a majority of the house. Luckily, since we were moving from a 40′ x 8′ motor home we did not have a lot of collected stuff to put away. The turkeys for both Thanksgiving and Christmas turned out great, if I say so myself, and the visits were wonderful (see next post).

The bed was our only real piece of furniture and you can see below how ecstatic we were to get it out of the rent house and onto the trailer. We took turns jumping off the back of the trailer onto the bed, somewhat like jumping into a huge pile of leaves. It was a blast!!

Scott in Flight

Me

Before moving anything into the house I went through and took these photos of the finished interior. The floors were so polished and the cleaning crew did such a great job on everything throughout. The first two photos are of Scott unwrapping and unveiling the long awaited wood-burning stove.

The Unveiling

These next two photos are of the great room from the vantage point of the staircase. The door with the large window in it is the front door. We had the front porch screened in as well as the side porch and the results were fantastic. The light through the windows in the morning is fabulous.

Great Room

The kitchen is just the perfect size for the two of us. In fact, I don’t think I would want a kitchen any larger than this. Everything is within reach while cooking and the size makes cleanup a snap. The kitchen is to the left when you walk in the front door. When you go through the kitchen you can go right into the laundry room and then right again into the pantry that is tucked away just below the stairs. We tried to make use out of every conceivable space either for daily usage or storage.

Kitchen

The laundry room is directly across from the refrigerator. When my father in law was touring our house he promptly stopped in front of the refrigerator and surveyed the various buttons. After what seemed like a long pause, he said with a hint of sadness “oh, crushed ice!”. It seems that his refrigerator he had installed last July did not come with this option.

The great room consists of the space from the entry door to the kitchen on the left and the staircase and hallway on the right. Entering through the front door you have the wood-burning stove to your immediate right and the staircase in front of you beginning on the right and going up and to the left to the second floor.

If you pass by the bottom of the staircase and continue through the small hallway to the right instead, you will pass a half bath on the left and end up in the master bedroom. The master bedroom has a full bath with a garden tub and stand alone shower and a walk in closet, too.

Proceeding up the stairs you can see the front door directly under the fan and the two doors to the right (as you are looking at the photo). The door without a window goes to the garage and the door to the far right goes to the dogs’ fenced in yard. This door to the yard is just off the kitchen. There is also another door that goes from the fenced yard to the garage.

Great Room to Garage

Reaching the top of the stairs you can look over the railing into the entire great room, or turn to the right to enter the small hallway that leads to our two upstairs offices. The office on your right is Scott’s and the one on the left is mine. Going through either office you can reach the common bathroom.

Well

Filling the Pond

Filling the pond

This weekend Scott, Christopher, and Larry rented a trencher and did lots of work at the farm. One of the projects they tackled was constructing a fountain and pulling it into the middle of the pond so that it could be gradually filled by our new well. Here is the pond prior to filling.

They dug a trench from our well up and over the embankment to the pond. Then they laid lots of pipe and constructed the tacky, but functional fountain you see below.

We Have Power Poles at Least

We have power (poles at least)

Normally I wouldn’t consider a power pole to be an exciting item. However, in this case, it really is! The power company came out yesterday and placed all the poles down our driveway and today they were supposed to run the lines. Isn’t she lovely? YIPEE!!

Update on the Progress of the House

House Update

The top floor is framed, wrapped and now has a roof. Here are some photos of what has been done in the past week and a half.

Front of the house, screened patio is on the right side.

Back of the house, screened patio is on the left side.

Time To Start the Top Floor

The framing for the upstairs floor was delivered and installed today. The framers intend to have the walls done on the upstairs tomorrow.

We’ve Been Framed

We’ve been framed

Well, it has begun, at least. The slab was poured on the 12th (yesterday) and the framing of the downstairs began today. It is incredible how fast this is going right now. Scott expects it to come to a screeching halt when some glitch inevitably pops up. For now, we are pleased that it is going smoothly and quickly. Enjoy.

The house slab is poured and is being smoothed out. Waiting on the final load of concrete for the garage.
