The Friday Night Lights Live Album Recording :: Friday Feet

Today’s Friday Feet comes from a live album recording here at Cornerstone Church in Auburn. I will probably post a few more photos of the shoot tomorrow but for now, here is a smattering of feet and music from the night. The live recording took place over two nights, last night and tonight, and was the first live worship recording for an album our band has completed.

I love the privilege of getting to worship throughout the week and not just on Sunday, or at least in the manner we do on Sunday. This was a special night in many respects, and I enjoyed the unique experience of getting to shoot and worship at the same time. Have a great weekend all.

No Refunds in Auburn for City Schools Fall Festival :: Friday Feet

I’m playing catchup today with some photos I took earlier in the week. My countdown clock to Uganda (we leave on Wednesday) is running faster than a normal clock it seems and I didn’t get a chance to post these Tuesday night after the festival. So, today’s Friday Feet comes from the Auburn City School Fall Festival that took place on Tuesday, but the feet shot above was just way to cute not to use for today’s post. Each year the Auburn city school system gathers at Duck Samford park in Auburn for their fall festival, and this year I was asked to take some photos of the opening band, called No Refunds. The youth have a great band and it was a lot of fun to listen to them play on Tuesday night.

Below is a shot of each of the band members from No Refunds. No that the fall festival is over we could use some actual fall weather.

The Mike Fisher and a Gibson Guitar at Cornerstone

The Photo of the Day today is of Mike Fisher who got his first chance to play guitar with the main worship band. It was pretty cool to see Mike playing with the worship band today, and although there is always almost no light in the worship area it does make for a more dramatic shot. I love the low light stuff, deep shadows and small reflections, like the light bouncing off Mike face in the second shot. Congrats on your gig this week Mike, keep moving forward.

Summer Camp Cornerstone 2011 Gets Underway :: Photos

So it’s that time of year again when all the churches in the country move into VBS mode (we actually call it Camp Cornerstone here, doesn’t sound quite as scary to me, but doubt the kids care what the name is, they always have a blast). Anyway, last night was the kick off for this year and as usually it was all hands on deck fantastic. I really doubt the kids have any idea what-so-ever how much work goes into pulling off Camp Cornerstone, but I do, and the time and effort put in by the staff and volunteers was well worth the excitement on 200+ faces last night. There is a lot planned for the rest of the week and I know they will have a blast while learning about Jesus, our faith, and how to live a life devoted to Christ. Above are just a tiny few shots from the opening set last night, others will be posted by the crew of photogs we had on hand last night. The sign of the day though goes to Mike Fisher with “Sock Puppets are Real” on his guitar… nice!

Last Few Instrumental Photos from the National Polka Festival

Here are two more instrumental shots from last weekend’s 2011 National Polka Festival from Ennis Texas. You can also see the NPF gallery on Flickr. These are two of my favorite shots of the weekend, one being the corner edge of a steel guitar. Time to Shoot the Worship Leader :: Photos

How often do you get a chance to shoot your worship leader, not often enough right? Yesterday I had a chance to do a quick photo shoot with my creative / worship leader here at Cornerstone to do some head shots for his blog and online profiles. It has taken me about 10 years to realize how much I enjoy shooting people in addition to animals and aircraft, and before some PETA and FBI office starts calling, of course I am referring to photography (for those who think I am kidding, some day I will post my story about my run in with the FBI in Memphis for taking photos).

Photography is one of those funny creative areas where you think you never get anything right and it always looks bad until you get into the dark room and see that you did actually accomplish something. I do have a few photo shoots coming up and Brian’s was just part of a longer shoot I had told him I would do when this new year rolled around. So far it has just been to cold, but this week I did manage to get some new head shots in and wanted to post them here.

Next week I will be doing some head shots for Rob with Marth’s Trouble. If you haven’t heard Martha’s Trouble live yet and you are going to be near by you should check them out, great stuff. In the mean time… here is Brian Johnson (or bslash as he likes to be called). Which one is your favorite (yes I know they are not numbered, just wing it)?

Encounter Lacks No Intensity for the Lord as it Winds Down in Auburn

If you haven’t heard yet Encounter only has a few more nights in Auburn before the ministry moves to Hong Kong.Â If you haven’t been out to the student activities building on the Auburn campus to participate with Grace Campus Ministries you have about two more chances.Â This coming Monday and the Thursday about 10 days later on November 20th.Â Below are a few shots I took this past Monday.

This semester has been a completely new challenge to me to find new ways to shoot in almost complete darkness while the band performs.Â For the past several months I had tried to get a shot of the drums but (by design) the drums sit in almost pure darkness.Â I was finally able to grab a shot as the sticks flailed through an led light on the other side of the stage.

Daniel Bashta, the worship leader, (who happens to be in Shanghai China right now) gives great meaning to the thoughts of intense worship.Â I love capturing Daniel’s eyes as he plays for his Lord.Â Many times I watch and know that he probably feels like he is in a room by himself and God having a conversation. I have really enjoyed getting to know Daniel and his wife the past several months.

Celebration Dinner is Over Now the Work of Ministry Begins

If you have been reading my blog at all you know our church had a huge celebration for 2008 last night called Celebration Dinner. It was a fantastic evening of looking back and also ahead to 2009. One of the highlights of the night to me was when the band did a great version of Coldplay’s Fix You. Below you will see some photos of the band and b/ (the worship leader) playing Fix You. I have been waiting for months to get some good images of the worship leader, Brian, and tonight I finally got what I was looking for, not to mention having an incredible time of worship and fellowship with the rest of the church. I am really looking forward to this coming year and what God has in store for this church.

Jacob Blount Debuts at Eighth and Rail in Opelika :: Photos

This past Saturday I did a live performance photo shoot with Jacob Blount at Eighth & Rail in Opelika Alabama. This was Jacob’s debut performance and he combined it with an art show and an all around creative evening time. A local artist, RC, hung painting, drawings, and photographic prints and dubbed the night “drink-n-draw”. Each table was supplied with a sketch pad (most of which had a few pages of completed sketches from RC) and guests were asked to draw or sketch as they listened to the music from Blount.

It was interesting to hang around with so many creative and talented people and I enjoyed the evening very much. Several of Jacob’s friends and family came for the opening and it was nice to see so many people there in support of Jak but even if you just walked in not knowing anything about the plans for the night you would have enjoyed a great performance from a local band. Something I really enjoy about live performance photography is that it is always a challenge. The lighting is always bad changing and you never know what to expect (although it was pretty good Saturday thanks to Dan King), plus you can’t really get any predetermined compositions or portraits. Even the lighting and the sound in the same venue can vary greatly from day to day, but as I told someone recently, 80% of photography is “showing up”. I was certainly glad I showed up on Saturday.

I still have a few edits left from this past weekend.
