Alabama vs Utah on Tap Today // Friday Feet

This has been a busy week and a busy Friday.  We started off the day with some tree trimming work on the farm.  Always good exercise and never a lack of work to be done.  The temperature has been going crazy lately.  Yesterday it was freezing and today it was about 60* so I managed to get in about a 10 mile bike ride before the bowl games started.

The bowl game of the day of course is Alabama vs Utah in the 2009 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.  It has been a very long time since Auburn has not made it to a bowl game, so this year I am just going to have to go for Alabama.  Hopefully next year we will be back in a bowl game somewhere warm.

Friday Feet today was a triple shot of trees, bike, and football (although the football game was Kentucky vs Easy Carolina, which was also a very good game).  As I write this the Alabama game is now and Utah has taken a touchdown lead, it should be a great game.  This year it seems like it has been a very long holiday and I am looking forward to getting back to a normal work week and to next weekend when Deb and I will take a short break down in Orange Beach.  Have a great weekend everyone.

Gene Chizik of Auburn is Volcanic on Google Search Trends

So this is basically old news now, Gene Chizik is now the new Auburn Tigers head coach we have all been waiting on now for about 2 weeks.  I almost felt obligated to post something about the new head coach living here in Auburn, after all, how often do we welcome a new head coach for the football program (that was a rhetorical question only).  It didn’t even take a rumor from ESPN to start the endless grumblings and he even had people how up at the airport for his arrival, and not in the same way Nick Saban was greeted by Alabama fans (though he really does seem popular with the players and coaches).   I was totally willing to give the guy a chance and let him actually land in Auburn before nailing him to a cross.  He was the defensive coordinator for Auburn (and a popular one), was part of the undefeated team, won a national championship at Texas, then… Iowa.

How hot was and is this topic.  Well according to Google, “volcanic“, and this was on a night that was competing with the Heisman Trophy of all things.  Several times within the 12 hours before and after he hit the #1 search term on google (and I am not sure how much higher you can go on google as far as hot topics than volcano), and after a full 24 hours of the news he is still sitting at #7.  To bad google hot topic trends doesn’t count in the BCS rankings.  Of course, that really tells me that a whole bunch of people had never heard of Chizik and had no idea who Auburn had just named to be the next head coach.

I really hope he doesn’t read a lot of blogs and online media.  I started looking around at the usual suspects and the overall negative tone was deafening.  Really my only question is if Chizik is the person to lead Auburn football back to a National Championship (it has been over 50 years of course).  Auburn football should be up in the top tier of NCAA football teams right up there with Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Penn State, and of course Alabama.   So why did we not go get the biggest name that money could buy?

Maybe money really doesn’t buy happiness, or 12 wins and a National Championship (just ask Alabama, they came real close).  Auburn had to pay about $750,000 to buy Chizik out of Iowa State, and apparently Iowa State is basically thanking Auburn for taking him off their hands.  Now really, I know he didn’t win a game in the big 12 but what kind of recruits can you get in Iowa State when you have to compete with Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and the big Nebraska?  Still, he has landed in Auburn and he will be the next head coach.  If Auburn wins football games next year everyone will sing Jay Jacobs praises, but the Auburn fan base expects wins, and not just five.

I am willing to trust the higher ups at Auburn and give Chizik the chance Auburn is willing to take.  He appreantly visited our church when he was living here as the defensive coordinator, so maybe he will come join us for worship again.  I know he will be welcomed the same as anyone else on Sunday mornings.  We can all have an opinion but no one at Auburn wants to win football games more than the kids, the coaches, and the University itself.  I have to think that somehow, they think this will be the way to do it come the fall of 2009.  Hopefully he and his family can withstand the pressure until that first kickoff game in 2009, it is a long way off.

Auburn vs Georgia in Final Football Game of 2008 Home Season, Looses 13-17 // Photos

The game was much better than I would guess many expected, but Auburn had a chance to win the game at the end with 15 seconds to go on the 14 yard line with 3 plays to punch it in and just couldn’t do it (see AP story).  No help from the refs in this game and all there is left of the 2008 season is the Auburn vs Alabama game on November 29th.

Here are some of the photos from the game today.  I am in the process of uploading the remainder to my gallery.  You can check the Auburn vs Georgia 2008 gallery later today and it should be completed some time tonight.  In the mean time, here are 4 photos from today’s game vs Georgia.  The one shot below is Mario Fannin scoring the first touchdown of the game as he dives into the endzone.

It seemed like a long season this year, and at this point the program can probably use a break.  I hope to see Tommy Tubberville back next year but this was a tough season for any coach.

Auburn vs Tennessee Martin Photos, Tigers Football Wins 37-20 // Game 9

Today Auburn finally ended up with a win after 4 straight losses starting with Vanderbilt back on October 4th and ending with Mississippi last week.  The weather was great and the game moved along nicely since it was not on TV this time.  No “red hat” referee was even on the field which was nice and the pre-game and homecoming festivities were enjoyable as well.

This week was the Ag Roundup in Ag Heritage Park where Auburn showcased the Auburn University Mobile Gasification Unit which converts wood chips and woody biomass into electricity (see more at the NRMDI website or their blog) and they also offered up some great southern food at the Taste of Alabama.

Below are some of the photos I took throughout the day.  You can see more of the photos from today at the Auburn vs Tennessee Martin gallery.  (Sorry for those who are not on DSL here).  Most of the day was spent in the sun (the North endzone will do that) but it was not so hot you couldn’t stand it like previous day games.  I was able to get some pretty good shots of the band this week.  The Auburn band is usually pretty accessible and this week was no different.  So for those band mom’s out there, just click on the gallery above to see more like the ones below.

The next two weeks will probably prove to be very difficult for Auburn.  All we have left in the season is Georgia, who always seems to be able to win in Auburn no matter what kind of season we are having, and of course the Auburn vs Alabama game on November 29th in Tuscaloosa.  I am sure all those Bama fans are licking their chops at this point.  For them, I would hate to get over confident and loose out on a national championship birth by loosing to Auburn but stranger things can happen.

Is This a Photo of Zacchaeus Waiting on Jesus to Pass By, in Auburn?

Every week there is a home football game in Auburn huge crowds gather for the traditional Tiger Walk where the players walk down the street through the fans and on into the stadium.  I saw this guy up in the tree waiting for the football players to pass by and thought of that great story Luke wrote about when Jesus was passing through Jericho and stopped to speak with Zacchaeus the tax collector.

Of course you do have to keep in mind, as you can see from the photos below, Elvis was also there, along with the guy from the Psych ward, so why not Zaccaeus? [see complete gallery]

Jesus Does Tiger Walk in Jericho

As the story goes in Luke 19 (see below), Jesus was walking from the Samaritan country side to Jerusalem (on His way to the cross), and was “passing through Jericho”, when Jesus comes upon Zacchaeus who has climbed a fig tree.  Zacchaeus knew this location was on the route Jesus would follow into Jericho and he wanted to just get a glimpse of Jesus and the parade as He walked by.  Since Zacchaeus was a man who was tall-challenged, climbing a sycamore tree was going to be his only way to see Jesus (and this is no easy tree to climb).

Luke 19:1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.  5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

To me, these photos have several parallels to the story presented here in Luke, and you can draw your own as well, but climbing the tree just to get a glimpse of the Auburn football players is our culture of today.  The football players, perhaps athletes in general, are the Greek gods of today for many of us, and we pack stadiums (I included myself here and I love Auburn football) with city sized populations each week to watch these very talented, hard working athletes do what they do best.

Auburn Football Lined up for Tiger Walk

We have raised these athletes to a mythical level, and pay a ton of money to see them at any chance we get.  As I lined up with 10,000 other fans two hours before the start of the Auburn vs LSU game, I saw this guy who had climbed a tree (albeit an oak tree in Alabama) while all the others, me included, lined up along the street to watch the players walk by.  The second photo is the center of the street where the players actually walk (now barricaded off on each side) just for a bit of perspective.

This is all part of the fun and excitement that is football in Auburn, and Bama football in Tuscaloosa, and is surely repeated in LSU, Florida, and all the other NCAA teams across the country, and then NFL stadiums on Sunday.  You have to line up about an hour before they do their walk through to be able to see the players, so I did, and stood there in the blazing heat with everyone else.

Standing there, thinking of story in Luke 19, I wondered if we would line up like this for Jesus as he walked through Auburn?  Would we still climb trees just to see His face?  Line the streets with banners, flags, and take photos and videos as He walked by?  Do we put these football players in His place in our mind?

Jesus Comes from Atlanta to Birmingham via Auburn

The really interesting part of the story told in Luke is in the very first verse.  “Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.”  Looking a little deeper we see that Jesus was walking from Samaria to Jerusalem, passing through Jericho.  Samaria was due north of Jerusalem and Jericho is just about due east of Jerusalem, just north of the Dead Sea.  In our terms, that would be like someone driving from Atlanta to Birmingham and passing through Aburn on the way.  Jesus went to Jericho on purpose, to speak to Zacchaeus, whom He knew by name.

The football players walk through the streets before each game because it is part of a great tradition that goes along with Auburn football.  They get pumped up for the game, we all yell and scream chants of WAR EAGLE as they walk by, and then win or loose, next week we line up to do it again.  I love the tradition and much of this is done in appreciation for all the hard work the football players do throughout the week in preparation for the game.  Not once though did Tommy Tuberville ever pull me off to the side and ask to come over to my house for dinner.  He did give me this really annoyed look when I probably got to close to him with my camera on this day (sorry coach), but that’s about it.

The story goes on in verse 9 to talk about the salvation that Zacchaeus received that day which began when he climbed a tree to see the parade go by.  Tiger Walk is great, and it give us all a chance to see one of the great traditions that is Auburn, but I doubt it changes lives, but it changed Zacchaeus’ life forever.

9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

In light of Auburn’s 13-14 loss Saturday to Vanderbilt, the first time since the 1955 Gator Bowl, it makes me cringe to think about how much pressure we put on these kids today to perform.  I can remember playing high school ball and being nervous when the minor league recruiters would show up at our games.  I can’t imagine the pressure these 18-22 year old college kids feel with thousands upon thousands (87,451 to be precise) all expecting perfection for each game.  In the end, they are not Greek gods, even if we treat them as such, and they are not perfect.  We shouldn’t expect them to be perfect either, we already have One who is perfect, and His Tiger Walk took place in Jericho 2,000 years ago.

Auburn vs Tennessee Photos, Tigers Football Wins 14-12 // Game 5

This week Auburn seemed to be lucky to squeak out a win over an unranked 1-2 Tennessee team, but a win is a win.  The remaining games are not going to get much easier, and next week what would seem like an easy game now seems to be a tough conference game against an undefeated Vanderbilt team.  This week the game was played at 2:30 on CBS and was sunny and hot, but still made for a few good photo opportunities.  Below are some of my favorite from the game.  To see the entire photo shoot see the Auburn vs Tennessee 2008 Gallery.

If you have photos from the game I would love to see them… please post a comment below so we can take a look.  Hopefully there won’t be to many more really hot, full sun, games left, it should cool off down here sooner or later.  See you here next week for Vanderbilt.

Cindy Wall Honored with Auburn Flying Eagle in Memory at Football Game vs Tennessee

eagle flying at the auburn football gameIt seems that every day since Cindy Wall [AU press release] died I have found out more and more about what a great person she was and how much she meant to so many people.  Yesterday there was a beautiful memorial service for Cindy at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Auburn where many people shared what an impact she had with the Auburn Athletics department and the Auburn students in general.

Today during the Auburn vs Tennessee football game, Auburn University has said they are going to fly the traditional pre-game flight of either Nova or Spirit (sorry, don’t know which it is today), one of the eagles in the Auburn Raptor Center, in honor and memory of Cindy.

I don’t actually recall Auburn doing anything like this before but I am sure they have.  Either way, it is a great show of how much Cindy meant to so many people at the Auburn Athletics department.  Below is an image from her celebration service at CUMC.  I will be at the game today and will post the images of the game later tonight (hopefully).  Let’s hope the Tigers fare better against Tennessee than they did against LSU last week.

Cindy Wall Memorial Celebration Service

[Update] The game yesterday was hot and loud but fun… the pregame did have a special memorial to Cindy Wall and the photo is posted below.  The stadium announcer did say the Auburn University eagle (Nova) was flying in her honor that day, and I took a quick photo of the AUHD sign as Nova flew.

Auburn vs LSU Photos, Tigers Football 16-21 Loss // Game 4

What an exhausting weekend last Saturday was for many people.  I normally have this post up on the same night as the football game but with everything going on this week, this is as good as it gets this time.  The Auburn vs LSU game started very very early for me with ESPN Gameday and through to the final shots of the stadium as people left the game (see Fans Exit Jordan-Hare Stadium After a Long Day // Auburn 21 LSU 26). So here are some of the photos from the day.  You can view the full gallery of images from the Auburn vs LSU game on the Auburn vs LSU 2008 gallery.  Images are being loaded into that gallery right now and should have about 40 photos of the day later tonight.  For now, here are a few of my favorites.

Let’s hope that this week’s game against Tennessee goes better than LSU.  I will make a quick prediction that we will see some of Kodi Burns this week, but of course that is just a guess.  It was a real heartbreaking loss to LSU, and the first time the home team had lost that game since 1999.  It wasn’t from lack of trying, the guys played their hearts out as well, we just fell a few first downs short (among other things).  Hope you enjoy the photos.

Lee Corso Picks Auburn to Win on ESPN College Gameday // Photos

I am running from Gameday and back to Jordan-Hare for the game itself.  Of course all plans can go away quickly, as I was going to post several shots here from ESPN Gameday in between the broadcast and the game.  Once I got back to my office and started transferring the files one of my cards got corrupted, which happens to be all the final images where Corso put on the Auburn helmet (which apparently he was miffed about because Auburn would not allow him to have Aubie’s head).  So, here are a few from this morning… plenty more to come once I recover the lost files.

Additional Gameday images can be found on the ESPN College Gameday Gallery.  Hopefully tonight I will get some good shots of Toomer’s corner after an Auburn victory.
