Today for my Friday Feet post I sit in my two most disliked places, one a hospital, and two, a waiting room. Feels like we have been waiting for this day to come and go for a while, I guess about 3-4 weeks since we knew Deb was going to have to come back to UAB for another test.

Though so many people have sat in countless waitings rooms I have not, and every time I come back to one for some odd reason I think this time it will be a “better” waiting room than the last one (whatever that means), but it’s always the same. It is a stark reminder that we are not in charge, and that there are many people suffering in the world today. Many of these people that seem without hope, without the knowledge that God indeed loves them in spite of their current situation. It’s hard enough to sit here, basically by myself, but I couldn’t imagine going through all this without faith, without people praying for me and Deborah, without knowing that God does have a plan for us, and His plan is undoubtably better than mine own.

For those who work in or around hospitals this is not new, perhaps they get anesthetized to everything, though I know not everyone does. I am so thankful for those who have taken care of Deb over the last several months, and for those who have come alongside me as well, but most of all I am thankful for an all-knowing God who has a great plan for Deb, even if we have no idea what that is right now.

Today is Thursday so I pulled this gem out of the closet (literally) for Throwback Thursday. I love the expression in Deborah’s face in this shot, it has always been one of my favorites. It was taken back in 1982 when she was 16 years old. This photo was sitting right next to all the pictures from “punk day” where they all seemed to go to school wearing what seems like normal clothes to us now (although Deborah had on a “RUSH” shirt, and I’m pretty sure that was for the band, not sorority week).

I hope somewhere in this Lent season you are finding some time to relax, reflect, and rejoice, it always seems like there is so much going on… the earth must be spinning twice as fast now as it was back in 1982.

A few people who didn’t get a chance to say hi to Deborah on Sunday asked me where the photo of her short hair is, so today, it’s the photo of the day. She was slightly concerned that Ebby wouldn’t recognize her but not even sure Ebby noticed. Deborah has very long hair her whole life so this is a pretty dramatic change but I think it looks great.  She has already decided after wearing this cut for a few days that she wants it even shorter than it is here, so by next week she may go back to Pam and have her cut it even shorter.

Either way I love the way it looks.

Today is the last home basketball game for Auburn for the 2010-2011 season (see Deb’s post too), but since we aren’t going to be there tonight last Saturday was actually our last game this year at the Auburn Arena.  It has been a bazaar season, personally and athletically.  For the last several years the Auburn Basketball season has been a time that Deborah and I get to spend with each other that doesn’t have the craziness of football season, is a sporting event that takes place indoors, and is just a nice time for us to spend a little extra time together.

This year’s season felt scattered and intermittent since it started with Deb in the hospital and ended today with us headed to Birmingham for another doctors appointment. In between there was a new coach and a new arena with lots of growing pains. I can’t sit here and say it was one of the most pleasant seasons, but it was certainly memorable and I am truly looking forward to the 2011-2012 season (along with the upcoming NCAA Tournament of course).

For some reason it almost feels like another chapter is turned and life goes on. I am so thankful for the prayers and relationships that have been strengthened during this season. I love this shot of my mom below that I took at the last basketball game, it just reminds me of a look of confidence in her eyes (of course she is looking at my dad who is out of the shot). Maybe next year Auburn will be able to build on this year, either way I look forward to cheering them on.

My Throwback Thursday pic for today was a shot taken of Deborah and her parents in 1979. I love these old photos (cleaned up a bit color wise in the scan from the original though). They were all developed using some common film processor at the time and this was has on the back “Fox Photo Mar 1979″. I would like to add that at the date the photo was taken I was 8 years old and Deborah was 13. Sounds weird but we were in totally different worlds in 1979 for sure.

Although you can look back at hair and cloths and stuff from the 1970′s and laugh, but it was all the rage back then. At some point I am going to actually take all my old printed photos and send them to a scanning lab to get back DVD’s. I am still investigating the best company to scan photos to files, most the price is way to high, around $.39 a pic. Still working on moving from that paper era into the digital era.

After flipping through a few photos I took from a few years ago I came across this one. Sometimes I really love the look of the old film grain.  I basically just took the negative scan here and didn’t do anything to it, this is basically right out of the camera.

Last night we went out to Chewacla State Park for a very quick trial run to test out the Dagger Axis 10.5 Kayak. This boat is much smaller than our previous kayaks but is very stable, easy to maneuver, and tracks quite well. We got to Chewacla too late to give it a real good testing but it was nice to get out on the water for a short time and to see the sunset together. It was a beautiful “fall” sunset, full of mosquitoes and 95*F weather, but as you can see from the photos it was well worth the trouble.

There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of review information about the Dagger Axis around the blogosphere but from a first impression it certainly gives a lot of bang for the buck and is one of the only kayaks that can seem to adequately cover both white water and recreational or touring flat water. From past experience you really can’t get a good feel for how a kayak handles until you have sat in one all day and paddled for hours (or miles), much like riding a street bike for the better part of 40-50 miles at a time. Hopefully the weather will cool off soon and we can do a little paddling during the day without having heat stroke. For now, here are a few pics from the launch (I’m the one with no hair), and one from the lake.
