Good Grief a Birthday Again, I am Turning Fourty-One Today

It’s official, I have crossed the threshold and am 41. The day was spent relaxing and doing pretty much whatever came up here at home. Scott baked a cake for me and it was stupendous!!  I was glad for some quiet time and not a lot of fanfare.  I don’t think we need to celebrate birthday’s after 40 do we?

Yummy!!

How does this thing work???

My gift would have been an insult had I not actually asked for it. Now to rebound myself through my 40’s. The fat will probably successfully stay away, but I will probably sprain my ankle or break my leg instead. Stay tuned.

Cleaning a Catalina Sailboat Makes a Huge Difference

Our work on the clean-up of the Catalina 22 is finished. We worked hard to get her clean and fixed up enough to sell and now she has gone to a new home in Georgia. She is going to have her renovation completed there by her new owner. Hopefully we will get pictures of her when she is fully completed. Here are some photos of our work.

Clean and ready to go.

We were able to sell the boat for $3,000 to a Catalina restorer who said it would go for $6,000 when he got done with it, I hope it does, it was a nice little boat, and one a lot of sailers love to race.  It is now off to a home in Georgia.

My Honda Shadow Sold This Week, My Last Ride

My bike sold this week and it was time to deliver it to the new owner today. Scott cleaned her up so nice it was hard to let her go. Below are some photos of my last ride. She was such a good bike and I will miss riding her, but it is time to go look at new boats now. We are headed out this weekend for Florida to look one over. It looks promising, wish us luck.

Super clean and sweet!

Easter Fun with William Our Grandson

This is the latest video of my grandson William. He is such a happy baby. The woman squirting him with water is his other grandmother in Colorado. Don’t you just love his laugh?

The Power of Water and Sails on a Catalina 22

The power of water propelled at high velocity is truly amazing. This past weekend we purchased a power washer so that we would be able to continue our clean up of the boat here at home where we left off at the car wash. The results were astonishing. The boat is so much prettier than it was before. Once the inside is washed photos will be posted. In the meantime, look how nice the main sail turned out. Scott laid it on our patio and power washed it. You can see where he had washed compared to where he had not.

Boys and their toys…
Main Sail

I will say that it is probably not the most perfect way to clean a main sail, jib, head sail, or anything that has a fabric or fiber material as it will weaken the overall strength of the material. We decided to clean the sails like this since they had so many seasons already and most likely would not be used for any competitive racing on this Catalina.

The Catalina 22 Restoration and Clean Up Begins

Yesterday we had a wonderful break in the weather and a simply gorgeous afternoon. So, we decided to take the mast and boom off the boat and remove all the remaining “stuff” from the inside. Scott gave the boat a much needed vacuuming and then we looked at the things that needed to be done to get her back in the water again. She will need some serious cleaning inside and out. The teak needs to be oiled or replaced. Scott will replace the wench that brings the keel up and down.

We knew the keel would not raise or lower and this was the only thing that was mechanically wrong with the boat, but we didn’t know what the problem was until we got in there yesterday and started taking things apart. Luckily we found that the cable was broken and the wench needed to be replaced. That is the best we could have hoped for. As for me, I am going to set about replacing the hatch boards (which are made of 3/8″ plywood right now) and then I will go on to reupholstering the cushions. 1970’s yellow is not my color.

Weather is Warm, Time to Ride the Motorcycles

The weather is finally holding in the mid-seventies this week with sun and mild winds. Perfect weather for a ride. The bikes have been calling and today we finally went out and geocached for a while. I feel another trip to Panama City Beach coming on really soon.

Surprise for Scott, Some Large Knitted Socks

The first of a pair of green wool socks that I am making for Scott is finished. I affectionately call this pair the gigantic socks. Hope they fit!

From a Cedar Log in the Backyard to a New Lampstand

I needed a floor stand for my daylight lamp and decided that I did not want to drop $60+ on a metal one so, as usual, I looked around for something I could use to make one myself. This is what I came up with.

The log is from a cedar tree here on the property that we were cutting up for firewood. I figured how tall I needed it and Scott cut it to length for me. Then it was just a matter of sanding it down and putting on several coats of polyurethane to seal it. I drilled a hole for my lamp to fit in and viola! This was my first attempt at any creative woodworking outside of cutting molding pieces, etc. I think It turned out great and it works beautifully.
