The Adobe support for ACR has greatly improved everything over using the Nikon Picture Control Modes but they are also still very useful

Adobe has added support for Picture control modes beginning with ACR 4.6. If you go to the camera calibration tab you will now see a camera profile drop down selection. The defalt is ACR4.4 which still gives the same bad results as before but if you add the camera profiles to your computer by downloading the from Nikon's website then you will be able to select the picture control mode that gives you the best results. You can now even create your own profiles and load them.

see the following link for more about the profiles and how to use them:

@ben yep, I am now really using CS3 and NX2, both, but independently. NX2 u-points are really cool, and it looks like Adobe just released this morning a new version of LR (Lightroom) with the same u-point control, go figure.

Thanks for clearing up the Picture Control business. I had wondered what the D2x Modes were about.
I have just upgraded to Capture NX2 from NX on the basis of the expanded usability of the u-points (the u-points were why I bought NX to begin with). I bought Photoshop CS3 after I bought NX and got so carried away with learning its intricacies that I forgot all about NX until recently. I tend to use Capture NX (now NX2) OR Photoshop but not both for the reasons you alluded to. Capture is kind of clunky but still yields good results.

@david the over saturation of the jpgs probably can be controlled through picture controls, in fact, check which control you are using and then manually adjust the saturation and contract to a slightly lower value and see how you like it.

Interesting and slightly disappointing insights into the picture controls quagmire for us PS3-oriented photogs. As Lightroom also uses ACR, its fanbase is also not going to get the results expected of using picture controls without going through the type of machinations you describe. Begs the question of whether any of the built-in hue/sat/contrats etc settings will have any impact on RAW output--painful to surmise.

I have been struggling with seem to me overly saturated reds across the board with the jpg output by my D3.
